Quantum memories entangled across 420 km of fibre
WhatPhysicists at the University of Science and Technology of China report matter-to-matter entanglement between atomic ensemble quantum memories over 420 kilometres of optical fibre — more than four times previous fibre-based demonstrations — in work accepted by Physical Review Letters.
Why it mattersLong-distance entanglement between quantum memories is a building block for quantum networks beyond metropolitan scale, including future quantum repeaters.
Caveat. This is a laboratory demonstration using coiled fibre and a short field segment; practical city-to-city quantum networks still require further engineering.
