2. Quantum memories entangled across 420 km of fibre
China
Physicists at the University of Science and Technology of China report matter-to-matter entanglement between atomic ensemble quantum memories over 420 kilometres of optical fibre — more than four times previous fibre-based demonstrations — in work accepted by Physical Review Letters.
Why it matters: Long-distance entanglement between quantum memories is a building block for quantum networks beyond metropolitan scale, including future quantum repeaters.
Caveat: This is a laboratory demonstration using coiled fibre and a short field segment; practical city-to-city quantum networks still require further engineering.

3. Cancer vaccine platform harnesses COVID immune memory

In Nature Communications, researchers introduce PROTEXI — a dendritic-cell vaccine that co-presents tumour antigens with SARS-CoV-2 Spike helper epitopes, leveraging widespread antiviral CD4 memory. In preclinical and humanised mouse models it slowed tumour growth and improved infiltration of immune-cold tumours. First-in-human sarcoma trials are being planned.
Why it matters: Many tumours evade the immune system; recruiting existing viral immunity is a practical path to stronger cancer vaccines without inventing new helper antigens from scratch.
Caveat: Results are preclinical. Human benefit is not yet demonstrated; planned trials will test translation.

4. Seawater CO₂ turned to stone with lower energy use
South Korea / collaboration with MIT (USA)
KAIST, with MIT collaborators, detail an electrochemical dissolved ocean carbon removal (e-DOC) system that converts dissolved CO₂ in seawater into calcium carbonate. In Jeju lava seawater tests the device ran 120+ hours, removed 80–90% of dissolved inorganic carbon, and cut electricity use by up to 54% versus existing approaches — while co-producing hydrogen.
Why it matters: Mineralising ocean carbon addresses permanence and electrode fouling barriers that have slowed marine carbon-removal technology.
Caveat: Lab and pilot-scale results need longer trials, lifecycle assessment, and ecological evaluation before large-scale claims.

5. Malaria vaccine averted ~1 in 8 child deaths in first rollouts

A Lancet evaluation of RTS,S introduction in Ghana, Kenya and Malawi over ~46 months finds a mortality rate ratio of 0.87 (95% CI 0.77–0.97) among vaccine-eligible children — roughly one in eight deaths averted despite only moderate three-dose coverage. WHO notes 25 African countries now offer malaria vaccines.
Why it matters: Real-world evidence that vaccines save children’s lives strengthens the case to fund wider, sustained rollout where malaria remains a leading killer.

6. UNESCO: 327 million more children in school than in 2000 — and hard unfinished work
